Byju's adds another feather to its cap by acquiring WhiteHat Jr, a live online coding EdTech start-up, for $300 million in an all-cash deal. EdTech sector has been booming in India, especially during the pandemic. WhiteHat Jr, a Mumbai-based edtech start-up, provides online coding classes to school students in India. In a short span of 18 months, the company was able to raise $11 million funding in its series A round. Under the exceptional leadership of its founder Karan Bajaj, WhiteHat Jr achieved a revenue run rate of $150 million. It has more than 5000 teachers onboard and a customer base of 20,000 students. The acquisition has been one of the fastest exit stories in the Indian start-up ecosystem. It is also the largest acquisition by Byju’s to date. However, Karan Bajaj will continue to lead the business.
Byju’s, already the market leader in the Indian EdTech industry, currently has offerings in STEM subjects and entrance exam preparations. Now, it can expand into coding subject too, a promising and fast-growing segment in the K-12 segment, using WhiteHat Jr's technology and other resources. The National Education Policy (NEP) also stresses the importance of coding skills in students. Undoubtedly, India’s most loved tutoring app is on a growth rampage. Other EdTech start-ups like Vedantu and Unacademy have also achieved skyrocketing growth during the pandemic.
